OrlandoSentinel, By Sara K. Clarke, Sentinel Staff Writer About two-thirds of small-business owners think that lawsuit abuse has hurt Florida's economy, according to a survey released last week. Florida Stop Lawsuit Abuse, an advocacy group that lobbies the Legislature for tort reform, commissioned the survey, which was conducted by Braun Research. It polled 500 small-business owners and managers across the state. More than one in three small-business owners said lawsuit abuse has raised their costs, made products more expensive, or forced them to restrict, reduce or change their business offerings. Carlos Muhletaler, executive director of Florida Stop Lawsuit Abuse, said frivolous lawsuits are flooding the state's courts and taxing mom-and-pop businesses. "Even though they [the lawsuits] get thrown out of court, it's costing them money," he said. "The consumer is paying for that in the long run." |
